Disney star Demi Lovato has revealed her concerned parents staged an intervention last year after she suffered what she describes as a 'nervous breakdown'.

The 18-year-old Sonny With A Chance star was treated in rehab for 'emotional and physical issues' in November following her attack on a dancer while on tour with The Jonas Brothers.

Earlier this week it was revealed that the star was treated for an eating disorder and faces a 'life-long' battle with her self image. She is also understood to have self-harmed during her struggles.

In an excerpt from her interview in the new issue of America's Seventeen magazine, the Disney star says: 'I basically had a nervous breakdown.

'I was really bad off. My parents and my manager pulled me aside and said, "You need to get some help." It was an intervention.

'I wanted freedom from the inner demons,' she adds. 'I wanted to start my life over.'

'If you are going through that dark period, go to your family and closest friends. Don't put yourself in danger.'

Demi was admitted to the Michigan rehab facility shortly after she punched a female performer while travelling on tour.

Since leaving rehab in January, the star has had the words 'stay strong' tattooed onto her wrists as an encouragement.
