Divers to the rescue! Temperatures were so called you could see the breath on the actors' mouths
The weather was so cold you could see the breath forming around the actors' mouths. However, neither was allowed to wear a wetsuit for their waterlogged action scenes.
While Cruise, 48, was lucky enough to don a black leather jacket before leaping into the chilly waters, Renner, 39, had to film his scenes wearing nothing but a suit.
Night time temperatures outside the water were at least a little warmer, measuring at around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Jumping to safety: Jeremy Renner gets a helping hand from the crew
Directed by Brad Bird, other actors involved in the film include Josh Holloway, Lea Seydoux, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Michael Nyqvist.
According to Variety, plot details of the movie are strictly under wraps as is the official title fo the fourth instalment , although it has been confirmed that the movie will not carry on where Mission Impossible III left off.
Unlike the previous three Mission Impossible movies, Cruise's character - Ethan Hunt - is working with only one other agent, played by Jeremy Renner, and his role is apparently as large as Cruise's.
There's also speculation that Renner could play the lead role in future Mission Impossible films and eventually replace Cruise.
Cruise is co-producing the movie with Lost creator J.J. Abrams, who has cast one of Lost's biggest stars - Josh Holloway - in the movie.
Mission Impossible IV is due to be released on December 16 in the United States.
