X Factor: One more disaster for One Direction as fan is injured in rush to see boy band

By EMILY SHERIDAN

Ouch: A young fan ended up with an injured foot in the rush to see One Direction outside X Factor rehearsals in Wembley today

They haven't even released their first single yet and already One Direction appear to be reaching the heights of Beatlemania.

But excitement at seeing their idols turned to pain for one teenage fan today when she ended up injured in the rush to meet the boy band.

A young brunette was left needing hospital treatment after her foot ended up underneath One Direction's taxi as they arrived for rehearsals.

Calm down girls! The teenage fans had rushed One Direction's taxi as it tried to pull out when the accident occured

As the taxi pulled up outside Fountain Studios in Wembley, north west London, a group of screaming girls rushed the vehicle so the driver decided to pull away.

In the melee, one fan ended up injured and was later seen wearing a foot brace as she was wheel into an ambulance by paramedics.

A friend of the girl wrote on Twitter: 'OMG, my friend went to the X Factor Studios today and the car that One Direction were in ran over her foot and now she's in hospital.'

Medical attention: A paramedic tends to the injured fan before she is taken to hospital

Injured: The fan's hopes of seeing One Direction today are dashed as she's wheeled into an ambulance

The girl's injury comes just two days after One Direction bandmember Liam Payne hurt his ankle after falling on stage during a gig by rapper Tinie Tempah.

The 17-year-old was performing with his bandmates at Koko in Camden, north London when he tripped on stage.

Liam's injury has apparently made the group reconsider their choreography ahead of Saturdays' Halloween-themed live show.

Writing on his Twitter page, Liam said: 'What a doofus! Fell over on stage in front of Tinie Tempah.... so uncool.'

Enjoying his fame: One Direction's youngest member Harry Styles (front) and bandmate Zayn Malik (left) chat to fans over the security fence

Little heartbreakers: The group (L-R) Zayn, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry and Louis Tomlinson have been called 'five Justin Biebers' by judge Louis Walsh

Since they were formed by Cowell, One Direction have quickly established the biggest fanbase on the show with teenage girls across the country going crazy for the five-piece.

The four judges have regularly compared the group to other boy bands or 'five Justin Biebers', with their mentor Simon Cowell dubbing them 'the most exciting popband in the country'.

After their performance last week of Pink's Nobody Knows, Cheryl Cole said: 'You are my guilty pleasure. When you watch the VT and see all the hysteria you cause, that’s what you should do, that’s what boybands should be about.'

One Direction-mania: Fans off school on half-term hang on to a security fence for the chance to see their idols

'We love you One Direction': The fans even ended up on lying on the pavement in the hope of seeing the band

However, oldest bandmember Louis Tomlinson broke hearts this week when he admitted he had a girlfriend.

The 18-year-old said he had been in relationship for seven months and she came down from Doncaster every weekend to see him in the live shows.

While Cowell has denied Louis Walsh's accusations that he 'only cares about One Direction' and isn't giving full support to girl group Belle Amie, his former proteges Diva Fever has also echoed the Irish judge's comments.

Diva Fever's Craig Saggers, 21, told Now magazine: 'He only cares about One Direction. He sees pound signs when he looks at them.'

Calm: Fortunately Cher Lloyd (left) and Rebecca Ferguson's arrivals at rehearsals weren't so chaotic

It's the mother of all scrambles as pregnant fan gets her hands on Take That tickets... but thousands miss out as websites crash

By SARAH BULL

Thrilled: One pregnant fan poses with her tickets after queuing for hours outside Manchester Stadium

Thousands of Take That fans have been left devastated after being unable to purchase tickets for the group's Progress Live 2011 tour.

However, several people who decided to camp out at the various stadiums in a bid to get their hands on the hotly-anticipated tickets found their determination paid off.

And one of the lucky ones was a certain expectant fan, who decided to queue for tickets despite being heavily pregnant.

Posing with one hand on her stomach and the other clutching her precious tickets, the woman smiled widely as she was photographed outside Manchester Stadium.

After millions of keen fans logged onto the internet this morning in the hope of getting their hands on some of the hotly-anticipated tickets, many of the ticket websites crashed as they were unable to cope with the demand.

However, a statement from the group urged Take That fans to keep trying as tickets are currently still available to buy.

The statement read: 'Due to totally unprecedented demand all ticket agents have struggled to cope with the number of people logging on to try and buy Take That tickets.

Ecstatic: A group of fans who queued for hours at Manchester Stadium pose with their Take That tickets

Excited: (Left to right) Carol Anne King, Joanna Webb and Sam Owen from Wednesbury with their tickets outside Villa Park, Birmingham

'The technology available has not been able to keep up with demand however all ticket agents are confident they will be able to process all enquiries so are asking fans to keep trying.'

The demand for the tickets, which went on sale at 9am this morning, is also causing issues with the UK telephone network, according to Ticketmaster.

Following the unprecedented demand, Take That decided to put three more dates up for sale, in Sunderland, Glasgow and Birmingham on May 31st, June 24th, and June 28th respectively.

Still smiling: Fans who stayed overnight seen outside Villa Park this morning

Desperation: Many fans queued overnight in a bid to get their hands on tickets in Birmingham

The online retailer added in a statement: 'Call volume is at least twice that of the Michael Jackson on sale last March. We are working to resolve the issues and we are confident that fans will be able to purchase tickets and we ask that they keep trying.'

BT added: 'Despite huge levels of demand this morning for Take That tickets, the UK’s telephone network coped well with the volume of calls received, which was 3-4 times above normal levels.

'Some traffic management was introduced to allow the network to cope with the high volume of calls, so some people may have experienced difficulty in getting through on the phone to some ticket outlets.'

And while general admission tickets have not yet sold out, there are already thousands of people putting their tickets up for sale on auction sites including eBay.

Comeback: Take That announced their tour plans earlier this week

Back on the road: The boys originally put 15 UK dates on sale but already added three more dates

Two tickets for Take That's performance at Manchester were already fetching a staggering price of £357, while a pair of standing tickets for Wembley were at £405 with over half an hour left on the auction.

One fan wrote on Twitter: 'Isn't it really annoying that many of the people buying #TakeThat tickets are doing so to sell on at extortionist prices?'

One fan, Laura Docherty, wrote on the band's Facebook page: 'I got tickets. But I've never experienced every website down. Got tickets in the end. Good luck to you all who are trying.'

There have also been warnings from the police urging fans not to buy tickets for the tour from any unofficial websites, as many sites have already been set up specifically to sell fake tickets.

Detective Inspector Sean Crotty, of the Metropolitan Police Economic and Specialist Crime Command, says, 'There are huge numbers of Take That fans who will be desperate to get hold of tickets for these concerts.

Early risers: The queue outside Villa Park in the early hours of the morning

Dedication: Claire Bateman, Caroline Chalmers, Emma Hurd and Kelly Hurd decided to sleep outside to ensure they were first in line

'However, buying tickets from unofficial websites or agencies could result in them losing money, having their credit cards details compromised and ultimately losing out on the opportunity to see the band.'

Take That's last tour, Circus, broke British box office records when it sold 600,000 tickets in less than five hours in 2009. It was seen by more than one million people.
The group formed in 1990, but Robbie Williams quit in 1995 to pursue a solo career.

In 1996, Take That split, but Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange reformed in 2005 and have since released two hit albums.

The group are already causing a storm with their new single The Flood, which is widely agreed by Take That fans to be one of their best songs ever.

A Grand Day Out - spooky special: The best days out for a truly scary Halloween 2010

By MARK HUGHES-MORGAN

Tis the season to be scary: Grab your pumpkin. Halloween is here again

It's almost that time of year when things go bump in the night. Or, at least, on a day out somewhere in the UK. From castle ghosts in Cornwall and zombies in Brighton to scientific spookiness in Yorkshire, Mark Hughes-Morgan picks five great family trips for Halloween.

Park Hall Farm, near Oswestry, Shropshire

For some old-school ghost-hunting, the National Trust's 16th-century, moated Baddesley Clinton Hall, near Solihull, is promising - a local minister was murdered after being discovered trying to strangle the lady of the house. There are also three priest holes and plenty of half-term Halloween activities from £2 (01564 783294, www.nationaltrust.org.uk).

But for another cheesier 'spooktacular', the Park Hall Countryside Experience has fancy dress action, from mummy-wrapping (loo roll is involved) to pumpkin-carving (every day at 2pm).

Details: Adults cost £6.95, children £6.45; 01691 671123, www.parkhallfarm.co.uk - activities October 23-31.

Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Pumpkins and witches are old hat. Consider instead Hybrid X, at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, near Rotherham. A 21st-century experience that takes you through the laboratory complex of the 'Dominions Genetic Modification And Research Facility'.

A cast of more than 30 actors will attempt to scare the living daylights out of you as you negotiate 1,000ft of dark, twisting corridor space. There are appropriate levels of scariness for different age groups.

Details: Runs until Sunday October 31, £6. On Saturday October 30 there is an extra-scary level for grown-ups (8pm to 2am, including disco and bar). Hybrid X lasts about 20 minutes. Magna Science Adventure Centre is open 10am to 5pm. Adults £9.95, children £7.95 (01709 720002, www.hybrid-x.co.uk, www.visitmagna.co.uk).

Lancaster Castle, Lancashire

Famous for torture, hangings and witches, where could be finer for a family day out this Halloween than the medieval Lancaster Castle, once home to John Of Gaunt?

Already at ease with its macabre past - there are Dark History Tours of the Castle in November and December - Lancaster enjoys this time of year, with 'spooky tours and chilling surprises'.

There are spooky tours on October 30, but book early as the adult tours are already sold out. In half-term, the Judges' Lodgings museum, two minutes' walk away, hosts a programme of workshops, from Hansel and Gretel to the art of making an Egyptian mummy.

There are also chilling ghost stories (October 27), strictly for braver adults and teenagers.

Details: Lancaster Castle, 01524 64998, www.lancastercastle.com. (Children's Halloween tour: £5). The Judges' Lodgings museum (adults £3, children free) open in the afternoons until October 31; (01524 32808, www.lancashire.gov.uk).

The Zombie Parade, Brighton, West Sussex

The annual Brighton Zombie Parade, on Saturday October 30, brings out hundreds of bizarrely attired promenaders to flaunt their gore around the town. Starts at 3pm from Brighton Station and following the parade, the undead can head on to the Zombie after-party.

Details: www.beachofthedead.com
Pendennis Castle, Falmouth, Cornwall
One of the mightiest fortresses built by Henry VIII, Pendennis has an abundance of warlike associations, which blend nicely into Halloween and the supernatural.
As well as a Tudor gun deck, there is a guardhouse kitted out in World War I style, and a World War II observation post.

Naturally, it claims its fair share of ghosts, from soldiers in red tunics to horses - previous custodians have legendarily been woken by the sound of ghostly hooves. Other scary sightings include the ghost of 'screaming' Anna, a scullery maid, who met a grisly end on the stairs.

Lay all this fevered nonsense to rest with a Haunted Castle tour or a night-time Haunted Tour (adults only).

And for those with steely constitutions, you can stay in the on-site Custodian's Cottage and enjoy stunning views of Gyllyngvase Bay and the Lizard Peninsula after everyone - except you-know-who - has gone home (sleeps two).

Details: Family tour, October 25-31, regularly 10am to 4pm. Family tickets cost £15. Haunted Tours Oct 28-31, 7.30pm and 9.30pm, £15, pre-booking recommended. More information on 01326 316 594, www.english-heritage.org.uk.

Miss World pageant returns to China; Miss Norway is Front-runner

BEIJING, October 28 – A bevy of 120 beauties from around the globe will don their most alluring evening gowns and sexiest swimwear on Saturday for the Miss World pageant in the Chinese resort town of Sanya.

After a month-long tour of China, from visiting the striking Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing to shopping in Shanghai, contestants have now invaded Hainan island’s pristine beaches for the early mini-contests and the main event.

Norway’s Mariann Birkedal, the raven-haired 23-year-old who earned a spot in the final by taking the preliminary Top Model title, is tipped by bookmakers to take the crown-a result that might anger authorities in Beijing.

China has been at odds with Oslo since the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded earlier this month to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo-and any glory for Norway, even in a beauty pageant, might ruffle some official feathers.

However, forward momentum on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Norway appears to be on track, despite the recent spat over awarding of the Nobel Prize. “FTA negotiations between the two countries are still right on track and have not been affected by the Nobel incident, as far as I know,” Jo Inge Bekkevold, Economic Counselor for Norwegian Embassy, told the Global Times Thursday. Norway is currently China’s fourth largest trading partner in northern Europe.

Also tipped by British bookmakers William Hill are Alexandria Mills of the United States, Yara Santiago of Puerto Rico, and Brazil’s Kamilla Salgado.

The competition, which was first held in 1951 and is being staged in Sanya for the fifth time in eight years, annually rakes in a global television audience of about a
billion viewers.

“Miss World has a special relationship with Sanya and there is no better place to begin our 60th year celebrations,” the pageant’s co-chairwoman Julia Morley said on the official website.

Bookmakers are seldom right. In 2009, bookies’ favorite Miss Puerto Rico failed to advance to the semi finals; but in 2008 and 2007 they got it right with Misses Russia and China, the respective winners.
